How to Unlock Ranked Play in Warzone

By Luke Setzer · Updated 10/30/2026

In short

Ranked Play in Warzone is gated behind qualifying placements: a Top 15 finish in Battle Royale or a Top 6 finish in Resurgence, in any combination. Recent seasons have asked for 20 of them, an earlier version of the rule asked for 30 matches, and Activision does not publish the current figure anywhere obvious. Casual Battle Royale and Bootcamp have been reported not to count. Once the gate is cleared the mode appears in your playlist menu, and from there it is an SR ladder like any other.

Ranked Play is not in your Warzone playlist menu by default, and that catches people out every season. It is not a bug and it is not a regional thing: there is a gate, and until you clear it the mode simply is not there.

What the gate actually is

You have to post qualifying placements in normal Warzone. Not wins, placements.

Playlist What counts as qualifying
Battle Royale A Top 15 finish
Resurgence A Top 6 finish

The two mix freely, so a Top 15 in Battle Royale and a Top 6 in Resurgence both move the same counter. You do not have to pick a lane.

How many you need, and why the number moves

Recent seasons have asked for 20 qualifying placements. An earlier version of the rule asked for 30 matches instead.

Activision does not put the current figure anywhere obvious, and has changed it before, which is why you will find guides quoting both numbers and sounding equally certain. The honest answer is that you check it in game: the Ranked Play tile shows your progress toward the gate once you have started, and that counter is the only source that is definitely current.

What does not count

This is where evenings get wasted. Casual Battle Royale and Bootcamp have been reported not to count toward the gate. Neither does placing well in a mode that is not on the list at all.

If your counter has not moved after a decent session, that is almost always the reason, not a bug. Check which playlist you actually queued into before you assume something is broken.

The fastest honest way through

The gate counts placement, not kills, and that changes how you should play it:

  1. Play Resurgence if you want it over quickly. Top 6 comes round far more often than Top 15, and the matches are shorter, so the placements per hour are much better.
  2. Drop quiet. Edge of the circle, unpopular points of interest, and let the lobby thin itself out. You are farming a finish, not a highlight reel.
  3. Rotate early. Most Top 15 finishes are lost to a bad rotation, not a lost fight. Move before the circle forces you to.
  4. Play with a squad that wants the same thing. A duo chasing fights and a duo chasing placement will produce neither.

None of that is clever, but it is the difference between clearing the gate in an evening and grinding it for a week.

Once you are in

The gate is a filter, not a difficulty. Past it, Ranked Play is an SR ladder with its own rules, its own map and mode rotation and its own rewards, and the grind that actually takes time starts there. We wrote the how-to for that part separately: how to rank up fast in MW4 Ranked Play covers the habits that carry over.

Clear it yourself or have it done?

If you place in the top 15 regularly, do it yourself. The gate is not meant to be hard, it is meant to keep brand new accounts out of a competitive playlist, and twenty placements is an evening or two for most players.

It stops being reasonable when your solo placements are not landing, or when the season is short and you would rather spend the time you have inside Ranked. That is what the Warzone Ranked unlock is for: a pro plays the qualifying placements for you. Already through the gate and want the rank instead? That is the Warzone ranked boost.

Sources

  • The older rule, quoted from Activision, is in Dot Esports on Warzone Ranked Play: Top 15 in Battle Royale or Top 6 in Resurgence across 30 matches.
  • The 20-placement figure for recent seasons is reported consistently by astroboost and gametree, along with the note that Casual Battle Royale and Bootcamp do not count.
  • We could not find a current Activision page stating the figure, which is why this guide tells you to read the in-game counter rather than trusting a number on a website, ours included.

FAQ

How do you unlock Ranked Play in Warzone?

By posting qualifying placements in normal Warzone: a Top 15 finish in Battle Royale or a Top 6 finish in Resurgence. They mix freely. Once you have enough, Ranked Play appears in your playlist menu. Until then the mode is not shown at all, which is why people think it is missing or region-locked.

How many placements does Warzone Ranked need?

Recent seasons have asked for 20 qualifying placements, and an earlier version of the rule asked for 30 matches. Activision does not publish the current number anywhere obvious and has changed it before, so the in-game progress counter is the only source that is definitely current.

Does Casual Battle Royale count toward Ranked Play?

It has been reported not to, and neither has Bootcamp. If your counter is not moving after a decent session, check which playlist you queued into before assuming the game is broken, because that is the usual answer.

Is Resurgence faster than Battle Royale for the unlock?

Usually yes. A Top 6 in Resurgence comes round more often than a Top 15 in Battle Royale and the matches are shorter, so you post more qualifying placements per hour. The counter does not care which of the two you used.

Does the Ranked Play unlock carry over between seasons?

Reports from recent seasons say it sticks once it is done, but Activision has changed the rules around Ranked Play before, so treat that as likely rather than guaranteed and check the tile at the start of a new season.

Can someone else play the placements for me?

Yes, that is what the Warzone Ranked unlock service does: a verified pro plays the qualifying placements on your account by hand. Worth saying plainly though, the gate is not hard, it is just a filter, so if you place in the top 15 regularly you are better off doing it yourself.
