The Cayo Perico Heist Solo: How the Run Actually Works
By Luke Setzer · Updated 9/10/2026
Cayo Perico is GTA Online's solo standard because one player can complete the whole heist. You need the Kosatka submarine to unlock it, which is a large upfront cost. A clean solo run takes roughly twenty to thirty active minutes after setup, and gold is the best secondary loot per unit of space.
Cayo Perico is the heist most GTA Online players end up living in, and it is worth understanding why: not because it pays the most in theory, but because it pays reliably with nobody else involved.
Last updated: 10 September 2026. Rockstar has changed Cayo's payouts and cooldown several times since release, so treat the structure here as stable and any specific number as something to verify against the current week.
The gate: the Kosatka
You cannot touch this heist without the Kosatka submarine from Warstock. It is a large purchase, in the region of two million GTA dollars depending on options, and it is the single reason new players bounce off Cayo.
Worth being honest about the maths: if you are starting from nothing, the Kosatka is a long way away and there are cheaper first purchases. The Acid Lab costs a fraction of it and starts earning immediately. Buy the sub when it is an upgrade to an income you already have, not as your first move.
Scoping is the actual skill
The scoping trip is where the run is won. What you are collecting:
- Primary target, fixed for the run, this is the bulk of the payout
- Secondary loot locations, which is where your variable earnings come from
- An entry point and an escape route
- Equipment and support items, especially anything that saves you a walk
Take the extra minutes here. The difference between a good run and a mediocre one is almost entirely what you noticed while scoping.
Secondary loot, ranked
Bag space is the constraint, so what matters is value per unit of space:
- Gold, best in the game for this, always take it when it is reachable
- Cocaine, solid, the reliable filler
- Painting, one slot, fixed value, easy grab
- Weed, low value, only if it is on your route anyway
- Cash, worst, skip it unless there is nothing else nearby
The mistake people make is chasing a distant gold stack past two closer piles of cocaine. Route efficiency beats loot quality once you are more than a compound away.
Keeping the run short
Once you know the island, a solo run sits around twenty to thirty active minutes. Getting there:
- Pick one approach and learn it properly rather than improvising each time
- Stealth is faster than combat when it works and much slower when it fails, so commit to the quiet route only if your path is clean
- Do not loot past your bag capacity, you are just walking for nothing
- Know your exit before you enter the compound
Is it still the best earner?
For a solo player, yes, with the caveat that the answer depends on the current week. Rockstar's weekly event, rotating every Thursday, regularly doubles specific heists or businesses, and a doubled Diamond Casino Heist week beats a normal Cayo week comfortably.
The setup most grinders settle into is Cayo as the active earner with Acid Lab, Bunker and Nightclub ticking over passively in the background. See the best businesses in GTA Online for that side of it.
When it stops being worth it
There is a point most players hit where they can run Cayo with the TV on and the money has stopped meaning anything. If you are there and you are still forty runs from the thing you actually want, that is a real argument for buying the cash instead of spending three more weeks on it.
If you are not there, do not buy anything. Cayo is repeatable and the grind is genuinely fine when it is not your fortieth run.

FAQ
Can you do the Cayo Perico Heist completely solo?
Yes. That is the reason it became the default earner. No crew, no second player to flake, no shared cut.
What do you need to unlock Cayo Perico?
The Kosatka submarine, bought from Warstock. It is a large upfront purchase, in the region of two million GTA dollars, and it is the gate on the whole heist.
What is the best secondary loot in Cayo Perico?
Gold, because it is worth the most per unit of bag space. Cocaine is next. Cash is the weakest and worth skipping if better loot is nearby.
How long does a solo Cayo run take?
Roughly twenty to thirty active minutes once you know the route, plus scoping and prep beforehand.
Is there a cooldown on Cayo Perico?
Yes. Rockstar has adjusted the cooldown and the payouts several times since release, so check the current rules against the live game rather than an old video.
