GTA 6 Preload and Launch Week: How to Be Playing on 19 November

By Luke Setzer · Updated 9/10/2026

In short

GTA 6 preload opens 12 November 2026 and the game unlocks 19 November on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not published a final install size, so clear generous space rather than a specific number, update system software before preload, and confirm your Rockstar account login works well before launch night.

GTA 6 unlocks on 19 November 2026. Preload opens 12 November, one week earlier. Here is the practical version of getting ready, with the parts nobody actually knows marked as such.

Last updated: 10 September 2026. Track the clock on our GTA 6 countdown.

Storage

Rockstar has not published a final install size. Every specific gigabyte figure circulating is a guess, usually extrapolated from Red Dead Redemption 2 or from a retailer placeholder.

What to do instead of chasing a number: clear generous space rather than the exact minimum. Day one patches install on top of the base game, and consoles handle a nearly full drive badly. If you have games you have not touched in a year, this is the week.

Before the 12th

  • Update your console system software. A firmware update discovered at preload time is the classic way to lose an evening.
  • Confirm your Rockstar account login works. Not "I think I know the password", actually log in. Password resets on launch night, when their servers are busiest, are miserable.
  • Check your edition and platform. GTA 6 is PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There is no last gen version and no announced PC version.

Launch night itself

Rockstar has not confirmed regional unlock times. Wait for their official channels rather than a third party countdown built on an assumption, because those get the hour wrong and the disappointment is entirely avoidable.

Two things worth deciding in advance, since they are harder to decide at midnight:

Spoilers. This is a story game with two protagonists, a chapter structure and decisions that alter the story. The internet will be full of endings within days. If you care, mute the obvious words before launch, not after you have seen something.

Pace. A playthrough was estimated at roughly 80 hours in preview coverage, an estimate rather than a Rockstar figure. It is not a long weekend game. Treating launch week as a sprint mostly produces a burnt out week two.

What you do not need

An online subscription to play. GTA 6 launches as a single player game with no online mode, so PlayStation Plus and Game Pass are not required for the campaign.

A plan for online. There is nothing to plan for. Rockstar has not announced an online mode or a date, and anything telling you to prepare a launch week online strategy is inventing one. See will GTA 6 have online multiplayer.

If launch week is not going to happen for you

Some people are going to be at work, or three chapters behind everyone else, or stuck on a mission on a Tuesday night. Story completion and specific mission help are real services from day one, and they are on our GTA 6 page.

Two honest notes on that. First, this is a story game, and having someone else play it for you costs you the actual thing you paid for, so think about which parts you want done. Second, anyone selling you GTA 6 money, ranks or unlocks for launch week is selling a mode that does not exist.

FAQ

How big is the GTA 6 download?

Rockstar has not published a final install size. Plan for a large download and leave headroom for a day one patch on top.

Rockstar has not confirmed unlock times by region. Check their official channels closer to launch rather than trusting a countdown someone built from a guess.
