How Long Is the MW4 Campaign? Length and What Is Confirmed
By Luke Setzer · Updated 10/16/2026
Activision has not published a length or a mission count for the Modern Warfare 4 campaign. The last four Call of Duty campaigns landed between roughly 4 and 8.5 hours on the normal difficulty, and Infinity Ward has said MW4 is probably the largest campaign Modern Warfare has had. Plan for one long evening or two shorter ones, and expect more on the hardest setting, where retries rather than extra missions are what add the time.
Campaign Early Access went live today, October 16, 2026, so anyone telling you an exact runtime right now is guessing. Here is what is actually known, what the last four Call of Duty campaigns took, and how to plan your evening around it.
The short answer
Activision has published no length and no mission count. What exists is a line from Infinity Ward calling it probably the largest Call of Duty campaign as far as Modern Warfare goes, plus four recent campaigns to measure against. Those landed between roughly 4 and 8.5 hours.
Plan for one long evening on the normal difficulty, two shorter ones if you stop to look around. Veteran is a different question, more on that below.
How long the last four Call of Duty campaigns took
| Game | Main story | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Modern Warfare II (2022) | around 8 hours | the longest of the four |
| Modern Warfare III (2023) | around 5 hours | the shortest mainline campaign, and players said so loudly |
| Black Ops 6 (2024) | around 8.5 hours | Treyarch said 6 to 9 before launch, which held up |
| Black Ops 7 (2025) | 4 to 5 hours | built for co-op, faster in a full squad than solo |
Those are HowLongToBeat averages for the main story, as reported by outlets that cite them. Hundred percent runs are a different beast: Modern Warfare II sits near 29 hours and Black Ops 6 near 22.5 once you chase everything.
So the honest bracket for MW4 is 4 to 9 hours on a normal run, until real completion times come in. If Infinity Ward's "largest Modern Warfare campaign" line holds, expect the upper half of that.
What Infinity Ward actually said
In the run-up to launch, Infinity Ward described MW4 as probably the largest Call of Duty campaign as far as Modern Warfare goes. That is a comparison inside the Modern Warfare line, not a claim about every Call of Duty ever made, and it came with no hours attached. It is the only official steer on length that exists.
What is confirmed about the campaign itself
From Activision's own posts:
- You play Private Park, a young South Korean soldier in live combat for the first time, when North Korea launches a full-scale invasion.
- Captain Price runs a second thread, operating outside the system he used to serve, hunting a weapon that shifts the balance of power.
- Campaign Early Access started today, October 16, for digital pre-orders of the Standard Digital or Vault Edition. Physical copies do not get it.
- The full game launches October 23, 2026, at midnight local time.
Mission names are not public. Only Entrenched, the Hajin City mission from the beta, has been shown. Lists of twelve or fourteen missions circulating right now are estimates based on previous games, not an Activision figure, and we are not going to print a number we cannot back.
Step by step: getting through the campaign without wasting the weekend
1. Install before you plan to play. The download is large and Early Access does not wait for you. If you are reading this before starting, get it downloading now and read the rest while it runs. Our MW4 countdown has a download-time estimate from a quick speed test.
2. Pick your difficulty on purpose, not by reflex. In recent Call of Duty campaigns the normal difficulty is the one those HowLongToBeat averages are built on. A harder setting does not add missions, it adds retries, and that is where runtimes double. If you want the story this weekend, take the normal setting and come back for the hard one later.
3. Play it in two sittings, not one. On a 4 to 9 hour bracket, a single sitting means rushing the back half. Two evenings is the sweet spot, and you keep the set pieces worth watching.
4. Do not chase collectibles on the first run. Recent Call of Duty campaigns let you replay individual missions from a mission select once you have cleared them, so anything you miss is reachable later without a fresh save. Hunting intel on run one is the fastest way to turn a 6 hour campaign into a 15 hour one.
5. Check what the campaign unlocks for multiplayer. Call of Duty campaigns have handed out operator skins, weapon blueprints and charms for finishing missions in previous years. What MW4 gives out has not been published, and we add it here the moment it is confirmed.
6. If the clock is the problem, say so. Early Access runs a week before everyone else, and that week is the whole point for a lot of people. If your week is already full, our MW4 campaign boost has a verified pro clear the missions on your save by hand, no cheats or tools, and you keep whatever the campaign unlocks.
Does the difficulty change how long it takes?
Yes, and more than people expect. The HowLongToBeat averages above come from normal-difficulty runs. The hardest setting in a Call of Duty campaign does not give you more content, it gives you more attempts at the same content, and a single checkpoint can eat half an hour. If you want both, the usual route is a normal run for the story and a second pass on the hard setting once you know the encounters.
MW4's exact difficulty names and whether there is a Realism option on top have not been published. We fill that in once the menu is confirmed rather than assuming it carries over.
What this page gets next
Real completion times, from actual runs, the moment they are in. Then the mission list with names, the per-mission length, and whatever the campaign unlocks for multiplayer. We would rather this page say "not announced" today than print a mission list we made up and quietly fix it next week.

FAQ
How long is the MW4 campaign?
Activision has not published a length. The last four Call of Duty campaigns ran between roughly 4 and 8.5 hours on the normal difficulty, and Infinity Ward has called MW4 probably the largest campaign Modern Warfare has had, so the realistic bracket is 4 to 9 hours until real completion times come in.
How many missions does the MW4 campaign have?
Not published. Only one mission name is public, Entrenched in Hajin City, which was shown in the beta. Mission counts of twelve or fourteen going round right now are estimates based on previous Call of Duty games, not an Activision figure.
When can I play the MW4 campaign?
Campaign Early Access started on October 16, 2026 for digital pre-orders of the Standard Digital or Vault Edition. Physical copies do not include it. The full game launches on October 23, 2026 at midnight local time.
Does difficulty change how long the campaign takes?
Yes. A harder setting does not add missions, it adds retries, and a single checkpoint can cost half an hour. The published averages for previous Call of Duty campaigns are normal-difficulty runs. Most players do a normal run for the story and a second pass on the hard setting afterwards.
Can I replay missions to get collectibles later?
In recent Call of Duty campaigns, yes: missions you have cleared can be replayed from a mission select, so anything missed is reachable without a new save. MW4 has not been confirmed either way yet, and this page gets updated once it is.
Is the campaign worth playing before multiplayer?
Call of Duty campaigns have handed out operator skins, weapon blueprints and charms in previous years, so there is usually more in it than the story. What MW4 gives out has not been published yet.
