The MW4 New Zealand trick is the region change Call of Duty players have used for years to get into new launches early, and players are lining it up again for Modern Warfare 4. On consoles, recent Call of Duty launches went live at local midnight, starting in New Zealand, so setting your console and Activision account to New Zealand can put you in hours ahead of everyone back home. Here is how the MW4 New Zealand trick works, what can go wrong, and the steps for PlayStation, Xbox and PC, plus what to expect on Steam and Battle.net.

What is the New Zealand trick?

New Zealand sits right next to the International Date Line, so it is one of the first places on Earth to hit midnight. When a game unlocks at local midnight, it goes live in New Zealand hours before it does in Europe or North America. The New Zealand trick tells your console and your Activision account that you are in New Zealand, so the unlock follows New Zealand's clock instead of yours.

There is no hacking, no file editing, and nothing that touches the game's security. You are only changing region and address settings that consoles already give you. That is the whole trick.

You will also see it called the New Zealand method, the NZ method, or just the NZ trick. New Zealand method and New Zealand trick are the same thing, different names players use, so this guide covers both.

Will the New Zealand trick work for Modern Warfare 4?

It should, if MW4 launches the way the last three games did. Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 all rolled out on PlayStation and Xbox at local midnight, starting in New Zealand, and Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 did the same on the Xbox app on PC. That rolling unlock is exactly what the trick uses. MW4 launches on October 23, 2026, but Activision has not published its unlock times yet. We update this guide the day they do.

Three honest caveats:

• Battle.net and Steam are different. On those two, MW3, BO6 and BO7 went live at one global time, 9 PM PT the night before launch, the same moment everywhere. There is no local midnight to move, so the trick does nothing there.
• Nintendo Switch 2: MW4 is coming to Switch 2, but we have not found any source showing the New Zealand trick working on it, so we can't tell you it does.
• Campaign Early Access: digital pre-orders get Campaign Early Access from October 16. Activision only says the actual play time is subject to time zone differences and has not published unlock times, so nobody knows yet whether the trick moves it.

Is the New Zealand trick bannable?

This is not a cheat. You are not modifying files, injecting anything, or exploiting the game, you are changing a region setting the platform hands you on purpose. That makes it a different thing from cheats and hacks, but only Activision decides who gets banned, so nobody can promise zero risk.

There is also an official warning to know about. At the Modern Warfare II launch in 2022, Infinity Ward warned that players who changed their console region to get in early would run into connection issues and could be locked out of the game until the official launch time in their own region. That was a lockout, not a ban, but it shows the trick can backfire and leave you waiting longer than if you had changed nothing. If it happens to you, switch your region back and wait for your own unlock.

How to play Modern Warfare 4 early

Every platform needs the same one thing first: your Activision account set to New Zealand. That is what ties your Call of Duty unlock to New Zealand time. Set it once, then follow your platform's steps below.

The requirement: set your Activision account to New Zealand

1. Go to the official Activision website and log in.
2. Open Profile, then Basic Info.
3. Click Edit next to your address.
4. Change the country to New Zealand.
5. Save.

With your Activision address set to New Zealand (the requirement above), PlayStation is almost there. Some players have also needed a PSN account set to New Zealand; it was hit or miss on Black Ops 6, so have a NZ-region PSN profile ready in case the address change alone does not unlock it. Then preload MW4, and if it launches at local midnight like the last three games, it goes live on New Zealand's clock.

How to play Modern Warfare 4 early on Xbox

With the Activision address change done (the requirement above), set your console to New Zealand:

1. On your console open Settings, then System.
2. Go to Language & Location, then Location.
3. Set it to New Zealand.
4. Restart the console to save the change.

Then preload MW4 so it is ready when the New Zealand unlock arrives.

How to play Modern Warfare 4 early on PC (Xbox app)

On PC the trick can only work through the Xbox app, with Game Pass or a Microsoft Store copy of MW4. For Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 that version rolled out at local midnight like the consoles, while Battle.net and Steam went live at one global time. With the Activision address change done (the requirement above):

1. Open Windows Settings, then Time & Language.
2. Go to Language & Region.
3. Set Country or region to New Zealand.
4. Restart your PC, then launch the Xbox app.

Can you play Modern Warfare 4 early on Steam or Battle.net?

Honest answer: not with the New Zealand trick. For Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, Battle.net and Steam went live at one global time, 9 PM PT the night before launch, which is midnight on the US East Coast and early morning in Europe. Everyone on those platforms got in at the same moment, so changing your region or your Activision address had nothing to move. Activision has not published MW4's PC unlock time yet, and if it follows the same pattern, the same applies.

Your options if you play MW4 on Steam or Battle.net:

• Buy MW4 through the Xbox app instead (Game Pass or the Microsoft Store version on PC). For Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 that version unlocked at local midnight like the consoles, so the New Zealand trick can apply there.
• Pre-order for Campaign Early Access. Digital pre-orders get Campaign Early Access from October 16, a week before the full launch. Activision has not published its unlock times yet.
• Preload and be ready. Preload Modern Warfare 4 ahead of time so you are in the second the PC unlock goes live.

Preload MW4 first

Whatever platform you are on, download and preload Modern Warfare 4 before the unlock. For the last three games, preload opened a few days before launch. If you wait until the unlock to start downloading, you lose the head start you set all this up for. How big is the head start?

It depends where you actually live, and it only applies if MW4 unlocks at local midnight like the last three games. New Zealand is up to a full day ahead of the last time zones, so you could be playing MW4 while your region is still on the day before. For Central Europe that is roughly half a day early, and for the US West Coast it is close to a full day. Either way, you are in before your friends.
