GTA 6 Extended Look: Everything Rockstar Actually Showed

By Luke Setzer · Updated 9/10/2026

In short

Rockstar's GTA 6 Extended Look ran about 26 minutes, was captured entirely in-game on PS5, and debuted on Netflix on 27 August 2026 before going free on YouTube the same evening. It confirmed two switchable protagonists, a six star wanted system, a Criminal Profile that tracks your behaviour, and robberies with a real speed versus take tradeoff.

Rockstar's Extended Look premiered on Netflix on 27 August 2026, six hours ahead of everyone else, then went out free on Rockstar's own site and YouTube the same evening. It ran roughly 26 minutes and was captured entirely in-game on PS5, which is the detail that matters most: this is the game, not a cinematic.

It is not Trailer 3, and it is not a documentary. It is a gameplay presentation.

Two protagonists, and switching between them

Jason and Lucia are both playable, and you switch between them through most of the game. Their relationship has an optional romance and can also stay platonic. Both have detailed backstories the game surfaces as you play.

The interesting mechanical consequence: they can split up during a police chase to divide the response. That turns a two character setup into an actual tool rather than a narrative device.

The wanted system, rebuilt

The six star wanted level is back, up from GTA 5's five. More importantly, the logic underneath changed.

Police now respond to what is actually witnessed or caught by security. Do something with no witnesses and no cameras and you are not automatically hunted. When you are wanted, icons show what the authorities actually know about you: your identity, your outfit, your vehicle. Change the variable they have, and you change the chase.

This is the single biggest shift from GTA 5, where the stars felt like a punishment meter. Here it reads as a system with inputs you can manipulate.

Criminal Profile

A Criminal Profile tracks patterns in how you play and feeds into how NPCs react to you and how the story develops. Rockstar has not detailed the full mechanics, so treat the exact effects as unknown, but the framing is clear enough: the game notices what kind of criminal you are.

Robberies with a real tradeoff

Robberies were shown with a decision at the centre: blow the safe fast and loud, or work the combination slowly for more. Store hold ups and bank heists both featured.

Vehicle theft has security tiers, with higher tier cars requiring the right equipment rather than a coat hanger and optimism.

Missions generally allowed multiple approaches, multiple escape routes, and a choice of role, driving or shooting, when there are two of you.

Movement, presentation and the small stuff

  • Focus highlights nearby objects and useful details.
  • The phone is a physical object in your character's hand, not a HUD overlay.
  • Your body changes visibly with diet and exercise.
  • Character customisation covers haircuts, clothing and facial hair, some available at safehouses and some only in shops.
  • An in-world rideshare app called Ryde Me.
  • Activities shown included mini golf, kayaking, diving, parachuting, pool, the zoo and wildlife tracking.

The map

The state of Leonida, with Vice City at its centre, and distinct regions with their own architecture and feel. Preview estimates put the map at roughly double GTA 5's, with Vice City around twice the size of Los Santos, and some comparisons ran as high as three times Red Dead Redemption 2. Those are estimates from people who watched the presentation. Rockstar has not published map measurements.

Structure and length

The campaign is chapter based, closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 than to GTA 5, with decisions ranging from minor to story altering. Money matters for progressing the story. Preview coverage landed on roughly 80 hours for a playthrough, which is an estimate rather than an official number.

What it did not show

Any online mode. The Extended Look was single player, and Rockstar has separately confirmed the game launches single player only, with no online mode announced. See will GTA 6 have online multiplayer for what has and has not been said.

It also did not show a PC version, a final install size, the full map, or anything about post launch content.

What it means for playing on day one

Two things stand out for anyone planning their launch week. The wanted system rewards thinking about what the police actually know, which is a different skill from GTA 5's outrun-the-stars approach. And the chapter structure plus an 80 hour estimate means this is not a game you finish in a long weekend, whatever your plans say.

If you want the story done or the platinum cleared without the full run, that is what our GTA 6 services cover from launch day. Everything else in the catalogue waits for an online mode that has not been announced.
