MW4 DMZ Levels: Every FOB Unlock from 1 to 70
By Luke Setzer · Updated 10/21/2026
MW4 DMZ has its own player level from 1 to 70, separate from the 1 to 55 account level. The 3D Printer opens at level 2, the Vendor at 5, the Gunsmith at 10 and the Dog Tag Case at 20. The Boss Board is the odd one out: it opens after your second DMZ Order rather than at a level. On top of that sits a second track entirely, the Dog Tag, which runs 18 ranks from Steel I to Onyx III and belongs to one operator rather than to you.
MW4 DMZ has its own player level, 1 to 70, and it has nothing to do with the 1 to 55 account level you carry in Multiplayer. Everything at your Forward Operating Base is gated behind it, except for one station that is gated behind something else entirely.
What unlocks at which level
| Station | Opens at | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Operators | from the start | Your roster and where you spend Trait Points |
| 3D Printer | level 2 | Crafting. Recipes are ingredient combinations, and rarer ingredients unlock better gear |
| Vendor | level 5 | A rotating, limited stock of specialised weapons, bought with cash, delivered to your Stash |
| Gunsmith | level 10 | Buying weapons and attachments directly, once you have the Weapon Manuals for them |
| Dog Tag Case | level 20 | Where extracted boss dog tags go |
| Boss Board | not a level | Opens after your second DMZ Order, not at a rank |
The Boss Board catches people out. You can be level 15 and still not have it, because it wants orders rather than XP. If it is missing, the fix is to finish a second page of orders, not to grind levels.
The two things level actually changes
Stash size goes up with your DMZ rank. That is the quiet one, and it matters more than it sounds, because stash space is what lets you hold the gear for a Prestige run or a hard deployment instead of losing it.
Stations open doors, and the Gunsmith is the big one. Level 10 is where DMZ stops being purely scavenged. Before it you fight with what the ground gave you. After it, with Weapon Manuals extracted, you buy what you want. If you only move one number, move it to 10.
The Dog Tag is a different track
This is the part people mix up. Your DMZ player level is yours. The Dog Tag belongs to one operator, and every operator has their own.
It runs 18 ranks in six tiers: Steel, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Damascus and Onyx, each with a I, II and III. Every rank up hands that operator one Trait Point, so a fully developed operator holds 18. Those points go into three trees, Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist, and once a trait is picked it is locked in. No respec.
Two consequences worth planning around:
- A developed operator is expensive to lose. MIA rescue costs are priced by Trait Points, so the better the operator, the bigger the bill when they go down.
- At 18 points the only way onward is Prestige, which wipes the traits and gives back a random permanent one. That is a deliberate decision, not a free upgrade.
The fastest honest route to level 10
- Take Side Ops first. SAM sites, UAV towers, repairing trucks. Low drama, steady XP, and they do not drag a district's threat level up around you.
- Do the first two order pages early. They open the Boss Board, and that is not something levels will do for you.
- Extract. This is the whole thing. A deployment that ends in a body bag pays a fraction of one that ends on the helicopter, and the gear goes with it.
- Then push to 10 and stop worrying about speed. With the Gunsmith open, the rest of the mode gets easier on its own, because you stop starting every raid at a disadvantage.
Where to run all of that is its own question, and the threat level of every district is in our Hajin map guide.
Boost it or level it yourself?
Levels 1 to 10 are a couple of decent evenings, and most people get there without help. The stretch that sends players looking for a service is 20 upwards, and especially the run to 70, because the XP per raid does not scale the way the required XP does. If that is where you are, DMZ operator leveling farms it, FOB progression targets specific stations, and the DMZ packages bundle level, missions and stations into one order.

FAQ
What is the max DMZ level in MW4?
70. The DMZ player level runs from 1 to 70 and is completely separate from the 1 to 55 account level you carry in Multiplayer, so progress in one does not move the other.
What level unlocks the Gunsmith in MW4 DMZ?
Level 10. It is the station that changes the mode most, because it is where buying weapons and attachments directly begins, provided you have extracted the Weapon Manuals for them.
How do you unlock the Boss Board in MW4 DMZ?
By finishing your second DMZ Order, not by reaching a level. This is why players at level 15 sometimes still do not have it. If it is missing, clear another page of orders rather than grinding XP.
What is the difference between DMZ level and the Dog Tag?
The DMZ player level is yours and runs 1 to 70, unlocking FOB stations. The Dog Tag belongs to a single operator, runs 18 ranks from Steel I to Onyx III, and each rank gives that operator one Trait Point. Every operator has their own.
Does the stash get bigger as you level?
Yes. Stash size goes up with your DMZ rank, which matters more than it sounds: stash space is what lets you hold gear for a Prestige run or a hard deployment instead of losing it between raids.
Can you respec traits in MW4 DMZ?
No. Once a trait is picked it is locked in on that operator. The only way to clear them is Operator Prestige, which wipes all traits and hands back one random permanent Prestige Trait in exchange.
