MW4 DMZ Weapon Manuals: What They Are and Where to Find Them
By Luke Setzer · Updated 10/21/2026
Weapon Manuals are loot items that unlock buying a weapon directly at your Gunsmith, which opens at DMZ level 10. They are found in searchable containers and locked areas, and each one pays out 5,000 DMZ Cash when you extract with it. The word that matters is extract: a manual you die holding is gone, same as the rest of your bag.
Weapon Manuals are the item that turns MW4 DMZ from scavenging into choosing. Without them you fight with whatever the ground gave you. With them, and with the Gunsmith open, you buy the gun you actually want before you deploy.
What a Weapon Manual does
Two things, and the second one surprises people:
- It unlocks buying that weapon at your Gunsmith. The Gunsmith opens at DMZ level 10, and it lets you buy base weapons directly, but only the ones you have the manual for. Progressing through Mission Orders feeds the same unlock.
- It pays 5,000 DMZ Cash when you extract with it. That makes manuals worth picking up even for guns you have no interest in, because 5,000 is real money in a mode where a helicopter infil costs 50,000.
Where they are found
In searchable containers and in locked areas, which is the honest version: there is no fixed spawn you can farm. Locked areas mean keys, and keys mean either finding them or buying intel, so the practical route is to loot thoroughly in buildings rather than sprinting between objectives.
Higher threat districts hold better loot, and that is the trade. A manual in a Low district is safer to carry out than one from The Grid, but The Grid has more of them. Which district rates what is in our Hajin map guide.
The part that decides whether it was worth it
A manual only counts if it leaves Hajin. Die with it and it is gone with everything else in the bag. That single rule is why experienced players treat a manual as a reason to shorten a deployment rather than extend it.
Secure Slots change this: items in a Secure Slot survive a failed exfil, and Medium Backpacks are the first to offer them. If you are deliberately hunting manuals, the backpack is not a detail, it is the whole plan.
A sensible manual run
- Take a Medium Backpack or better before you start hunting. Secure Slots are the difference between a bad raid and a wasted evening.
- Pick a Low or Medium district and loot it properly. Songdo Wharf, Mirae General Hospital or the Deadtown exterior. Thorough beats fast here.
- Leave when the bag is worth more than the next building. Manuals do not improve by staying in your bag.
- Exfil quietly. Green smoke and the twin-heli if you can, and remember the flare is loud enough to bring company.
Boost it or farm it yourself?
Manual hunting is one of the more pleasant DMZ loops when it works: quiet districts, steady looting, no boss fights. It stops being pleasant when you need a specific gun and the manual will not drop, or when the third raid in a row ends with the bag on the floor of a stairwell. That is what MW4 DMZ weapon unlocks is for, and if the 5,000 per manual is what you were really after, DMZ cash is the more direct route.

FAQ
What are Weapon Manuals in MW4 DMZ?
Loot items that unlock buying a specific weapon directly at your Gunsmith, which opens at DMZ level 10. Each one also pays out 5,000 DMZ Cash when you extract with it, so they are worth taking even for guns you do not want.
Where do you find Weapon Manuals in MW4 DMZ?
In searchable containers and locked areas across Hajin. There is no fixed spawn to farm, so thorough looting beats a fast route. Higher threat districts hold more of them, at the obvious cost.
How much is a Weapon Manual worth?
5,000 DMZ Cash on exfil. For scale, a helicopter infil costs 50,000 and the first Operator Prestige takes 200,000, so manuals are a meaningful part of a cash run rather than pocket change.
Do you lose a Weapon Manual if you die?
Yes, unless it is in a Secure Slot. Secure Slots keep items through a failed exfil, and Medium Backpacks are the first to offer them. Without one, a manual you die holding is gone with the rest of your bag.
Do I need Weapon Manuals to use a weapon?
No, you can use anything you find on the ground. Manuals are about buying before you deploy rather than hoping during the raid, which is what makes the Gunsmith worth opening in the first place.
