MW4 Campaign Early Access: How to Play a Week Before Launch

By Luke Setzer · Updated 10/4/2026

In short

Campaign Early Access for Modern Warfare 4 starts on October 16, 2026 and is tied to digital pre-orders, a week before the full launch on October 23. It covers the campaign only. Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ stay locked until launch day. Pre-orders also include the Hunter Killer Operator Pack and the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack.

If you pre-ordered Modern Warfare 4 digitally, you are in the campaign a week before everyone else.

What you get and when

Date What opens
Campaign Early Access October 16 The campaign, for digital pre-orders
Full launch October 23, midnight local Multiplayer, Warzone, DMZ, everything else

Activision's own small print is worth repeating: actual play time is subject to outages and time zone differences, and platform availability can change.

What is not in it

Early Access is the campaign and nothing else. Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ all wait for the 23rd, which also means no camo grind, no weapon levels and no ranked progress in that first week. If you were hoping to get a head start on the mastery camos, that is not what this is, and the camo challenges are not even announced yet. See MW4 mastery camos.

What pre-orders include beyond the week

Pre-ordering digitally also carries the Hunter Killer Operator Pack and the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack. What each edition costs and what is not included (Game Pass, Zombies) is on the MW4 questions page. The Vault Edition adds the Hostile Alliance and Special Forces Operator Packs, the Signature Weapon Collection, a season of BlackCell and a DMZ deployment bonus.

Is the week actually worth it?

Honest answer: it depends what you play Call of Duty for.

  • If you play the campaign, yes. A week of playing it before the story gets spoiled in every clip and thumbnail is the main reason this exists. DMZ also picks up right after the campaign's ending, so you walk into that mode knowing why the exclusion zone is there, the detail Infinity Ward confirmed at TGS.
  • If you only play Multiplayer or Warzone, no. Nothing you do in that week carries into them.

Getting ready for the 16th

Preloading opens on October 15 at 9AM PT on PC and the install is 115 GB on an SSD, so start it the day before rather than on the morning. The full date list is in MW4 release date and unlock times, and the hardware side, including the mandatory Secure Boot and TPM 2.0, is in MW4 system requirements.

If you want the campaign finished rather than played, that is a service we run: MW4 campaign completion, hand-played by a verified pro, open for pre-order and starting when the campaign unlocks.

FAQ

When does MW4 Campaign Early Access start?

October 16, 2026, a week before the full launch on October 23. It is tied to a digital pre-order.

Do I need a specific edition for Early Access?

You need a digital pre-order. The standard digital pre-order includes Campaign Early Access, the Hunter Killer Operator Pack and the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack. The Vault Edition adds more on top.

Can I play Multiplayer during Early Access?

No. Early Access is the campaign only. Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ unlock at full launch on October 23, so no camo, weapon or ranked progress happens in that week.

Does campaign progress carry over to launch?

Your campaign progress stays on your account, but it does not feed Multiplayer, Warzone or DMZ progression, because those modes are not open yet.
