MW4 DMZ at TGS 2026: Hundred Spirits, Lieutenants and What Infinity Ward Added

By Luke Setzer · Updated 9/22/2026

In short

At TGS 2026 Infinity Ward detailed MW4 DMZ beyond the published deep dive: Hajin is held by a faction called the Hundred Spirits, its Lieutenant mini bosses are operators from earlier Call of Duty games such as Roze and Bale, and there is a hidden fourth threat level that marks you for elimination until you extract. Weather affects enemy sight and hearing, MIA rescues scale with operator progress, and a rescued operator loses gear but keeps its trait tree. In the interview, Geoff Smith said TTK is tuned per weapon with no target number, and Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026.

Infinity Ward presented Modern Warfare 4 to Japanese media on September 16, the day before the campaign trailer went public at TGS 2026, and followed it with an eleven question interview. Narrative director Jeff Negus covered the campaign, studio multiplayer creative director Geoff Smith covered multiplayer and DMZ.

Most of the DMZ systems were already public in Activision's DMZ deep dive. What follows is the part that was not, plus the interview answers worth knowing before launch. Both press sessions were reported by EAA FPS News in Japan, and the links are at the bottom.

New for DMZ: who actually holds Hajin

  • The Hundred Spirits. The exclusion zone is controlled by a faction with that name. Areas have their own difficulty, and pushing into one makes the faction push back with reinforcements. Vehicle convoys and aircraft move through the world on their own.
  • Lieutenants are old friends. The Lieutenant mini bosses are foreign fighters hired by the Hundred Spirits, and Smith confirmed they are operators from earlier Call of Duty games. He named Roze and Bale as examples and called them very tough.
  • There is a fourth threat level. The published difficulties are easy, medium and hard. Smith added a state nobody had mentioned: cause enough chaos and you are marked for elimination and hunted relentlessly until you extract.
  • Weather is not just weather. The dynamic weather system, from light rain to heavy fog, changes what enemy AI can see and hear, not only what you can see.
  • The MIA bill is real. Rescuing a missing operator costs in-game cash, and the price rises with that operator's rank. Smith's example was a 3,000 dollar rescue you cannot afford yet, so you farm it with a different operator first. The rescued operator loses weapons and equipment, but keeps its trait tree progress.
  • Crafting stays out of your way. Materials are collected into their own backpack compartment automatically, so you are not sorting loot mid raid.
  • Solo play got a stealth system. A new stealth layer lets solo players choose how loud a deployment gets.
  • Orders unlock the story. DMZ Orders arrive as pages of tasks, and completing a page unlocks the next story mission. Dynamic Operations chain randomly generated objectives into a finale and pay out in care packages.

Smith described the result as a game inside the game, with escalating AI threat, bosses, environmental puzzles, raid style operations and story missions in one mode. Four years after the DMZ beta, that is a different pitch.

If you want the full picture of the systems, our MW4 DMZ guide collects everything confirmed so far.

The campaign, in three acts

Negus laid out the story as a three act structure that moves between the present and the days before the invasion:

  • Act one: you play Park, a capable but untested Korean Marine, when North Korea invades the southern city of Hajin. In parallel, John Price operates completely outside the system in New York. Task Force 141 no longer exists, and Price is hunting Makarov and a shadowy figure called Archer.
  • Act two: Price allies with Valeria, is pursued by Graves and Shadow Company, and ends up in a confrontation with his old SAS friends Ghost and Gaz. Negus called that fight a defining moment for the Modern Warfare series.
  • Act three: Park is shot down and stranded behind enemy lines, then fights back toward retaking Hajin.

The cast is the largest Infinity Ward has assembled, and yes, that was Mads Mikkelsen in the trailer. Negus said the team wanted him from the start and that the story has been in the works for four years. The character's name was not revealed.

The campaign's reactor meltdown is what creates the exclusion zone, so DMZ picks up shortly after the credits.

From the interview: TTK, Blood Rush and Kill Block

  • TTK has no target number. Smith said the team tunes per weapon rather than by player health, that shotguns and snipers were out of line in the beta, and that adjustments continue through launch and after it. Aim assist and TTK are one ecosystem: move one and the other has to move too.
  • Tactical Dash stays a perk. Moving it into the Blood Rush perk was a deliberate beta experiment. It stays, but its place in the perk tiers is being moved so it is a more meaningful choice.
  • Kill Block is three pieces. The dynamic map is built from three interchangeable pieces at roughly Shoot House size. The team first built ten separate maps to sell the idea internally, and Smith deliberately let designers build only two of the three pieces, so nobody could turn it back into one fixed map.
  • DMZ gets post launch content. Smith said there is a solid plan for after launch, not yet public, and that new stories and content will follow the way they did for the original DMZ.

What this means if you play DMZ at launch

Three things are worth preparing for. Progression sits on the operator, not the account, so the first operator you build matters. Cash is the bottleneck, because weapons, Lieutenant intel and rescues all come out of the same wallet. And PvP pays: dog tags only count once you extract with them.

If you would rather not spend launch week grinding the base layer, that is what our DMZ services are for, from story missions and operator leveling to Lieutenant hunts. Everything is hand-played by verified pros.

Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Campaign early access starts October 16 for digital pre-orders.

FAQ

Who are the Hundred Spirits in MW4 DMZ?

The faction that controls the Hajin exclusion zone. Areas carry their own difficulty, and pushing into one brings reinforcements. Their Lieutenants are the mini bosses of the mode.

Who are the Lieutenants in MW4 DMZ?

Foreign fighters hired by the Hundred Spirits, and Infinity Ward confirmed they are operators from earlier Call of Duty games, naming Roze and Bale as examples. They carry customised weapons and drop dog tags.
