MW4 DMZ explained: Hajin, the Wanted system, MIA rescues and your FOB
Updated 7/6/2026
DMZ is coming back on October 23, 2026, and based on the official deep dive, it's not a side mode this time — it's the biggest swing in the whole MW4 package. Here's what's actually confirmed, straight from Activision's own reveal.
Hajin: the new zone
The setting is Hajin, a South Korean exclusion zone sealed off after a reactor meltdown during the campaign's invasion storyline. It sits right at the tripoint where South Korea, North Korea and Russia meet — and it's confirmed to be larger than Al Mazrah. If you extracted a weapon case out of Al Mazrah back in the day, you know how much map that is. Add dynamic weather on top, and raids won't play the same way twice.
The Wanted system (this one changes everything)
Play aggressive — keep killing operators — and you get flagged Wanted. Once you're marked, other squads can spend in-game cash to buy intel on your location and hunt you for the bounty. Rack up kills and the whole zone starts working against you.
Our honest read: this is the most interesting risk-reward system DMZ has ever had, and it cuts both ways. Slaying out paints a target on your back; hunting Wanted players is a payday. Expect this to be the skill gap in Hajin.
MIA: your operator isn't gone anymore
The old DMZ rule was brutal — die without extracting and everything's gone. MW4 softens that with the MIA system: operators who fail to extract can be rescued in a later match, launched from your FOB with in-game cash. Progression doesn't reset to zero because one exfil went sideways.
The FOB: your upgradable base
Between raids you're in a Forward Operating Base — and it levels up. Confirmed installations include a weapon vendor and a gunsmith, with cash flowing into weapons, attachments, MIA rescues and intel. The FOB grind is its own progression track, which means launch week is going to be a race.
The part nobody should skip: it's not free-to-play
Unlike the old DMZ, MW4 DMZ is part of the paid game. No free version, no PvE-only mode. You need Modern Warfare 4 to set foot in Hajin — factor that in if your squad hasn't pre-ordered yet (digital pre-orders also get beta access and campaign early access from October 16).
What we'll boost in Hajin
Our current DMZ services — missions, weapon cases, key farming, faction rep, loadout recovery — carry straight over to Hajin at launch, and you can line them up from the MW4 hub now. The new systems (Wanted clears, MIA rescues, FOB progression) are exactly the kind of grind people pay to skip; we're staging those services for launch too.
What's still unconfirmed: faction names, mission structure, exclusive weapon unlocks, exact FOB upgrade tiers. Nobody has those yet — when Activision reveals them, this guide gets updated the same day, not a week later.
