MW4 Launch Changes From The Ward Room: Aim Assist, TTK, Tac Sprint and XP Tokens

By Luke Setzer · Updated 9/28/2026

In short

In The Ward Room Episode 01, posted on September 28, 2026, Infinity Ward laid out what changes before Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23. XP tokens now count down during match time instead of real time and work in DMZ. Aim assist was toned down slightly, with a target of a 50/50 win rate between controller and mouse and keyboard at 5 to 15 meters. Launch TTK matches Beta Weekend 2, SMGs get range buffs, and tuning happens per weapon instead of by changing player health. Tac Sprint stays on the Blood Rush perk, now without a sprint to fire penalty, and Specialist returns shortly after launch so you can stack Tac Sprint and Ninja. Battle Hardened is stronger, Hardpoint spawns were rebuilt, and Zodiac got HUD, audio and movement fixes.

Infinity Ward launched a new show today called The Ward Room, and episode one, "The Road to Launch", is not a marketing reel. It is the studio sitting down to talk about the beta, the Zodiac map and what is being changed before Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026. Do not confuse it with From the Ward, the behind the scenes series they have been running since spring. This one is about the game you are going to play.

Here is what is changing, and what it means if you plan to grind at launch.

The short version

Every line jumps to the detail.

MW4 2XP tokens now count down only during a match, not in menus and lobbies

XP tokens finally work the way you assumed they did

The biggest quality of life fix in the episode: XP tokens now count down during in-game match time, not real time. No more burning a token in the lobby, in a loading screen or while your squad argues about a loadout. On top of that, tokens will work in DMZ, which matters, because DMZ has its own XP track that feeds your FOB, your operator rank and your trait points.

If you are planning a launch-week grind, that changes when you pop them: save tokens for long sessions in a mode you are actually playing, and they now stretch into Hajin as well.

Aim assist is coming down, with a number attached

Aim assist was slightly toned down, and Infinity Ward named the target: a 50/50 win rate in engagements between controller and mouse and keyboard at 5 to 15 meters. That is the range band where the beta arguments happened, and it is a rare case of a studio saying out loud what balance they are aiming for instead of "we adjusted values".

Do not expect a different game. It is a nudge, with a stated goal behind it.

TTK lands where Beta Weekend 2 left it, SMGs get range

Three things on gunplay:

  • Launch TTK matches Beta Weekend 2. If weekend two felt right to you, that is the version you are getting.
  • SMGs get range buffs across the board. In a game where a lot of maps play at medium range, that is the change most likely to move the meta.
  • Tuning happens per weapon, not through player health. Geoff Smith said the same thing in the TGS interview: there is no fixed TTK number, they tune weapon by weapon and keep going after launch.

Tac Sprint, Ninja and the Specialist perk

Tactical Sprint stays where the beta put it: exclusive to the Blood Rush perk, and now with no sprint to fire penalty at all. The catch is the slot. Tac Sprint and Ninja compete for the same perk slot, so you pick movement or silence.

That is temporary. Specialist returns shortly after launch, which lets you stack both. If your playstyle needs Tac Sprint and Ninja together, that is the date to watch.

Battle Hardened, Hardpoint spawns and Zodiac

  • Battle Hardened was buffed into a real counter, with much stronger resistance against flashes and tactical equipment. If you were getting blinded through walls in the beta, this is the answer.
  • Hardpoint spawns were rebuilt. New spawn logic puts you closer to the active objective and improves how the map flows, which was one of the loudest complaints in both beta weekends.
  • Zodiac got cleaned up, with less HUD and UI clutter, better audio feedback and the movement bugs fixed after community reports.

What this means for your launch week

Three practical takeaways. Hold your XP tokens until you are in a long session, because they only burn while a match is running now, and they carry into DMZ. Expect SMGs to be strong early. And if you run Ninja, plan your first weeks without Tac Sprint, or wait for Specialist.

If you would rather not spend the first week levelling guns to find out what the SMG buffs did, our MW4 weapon leveling and camo boosts are open for pre-order, and the DMZ side of launch is in our MW4 DMZ guide. Everything is hand-played by verified pros.
