MW4 Weapon Prestige Explained: What to Expect and the 4 Pyroclast Prestige Camos

Will Modern Warfare 4 have weapon prestige? It has been reported, not officially announced, and the reports do not agree with each other. Here is what is actually known, how Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 7 handled it, what we expect for MW4 and what each of the four Pyroclast prestige camos looks like. We update this guide as soon as Activision publishes the system at launch.

What is weapon prestige?

Weapon prestige is progression for a single gun after it hits max level. Depending on the game, it either resets that gun and makes you level it again, or it simply keeps counting your weapon XP toward prestige rewards. Either way, the rewards only show up on guns someone put serious extra hours into.

It is separate from player prestige. Player prestige resets your account rank, weapon prestige only touches the gun you prestige.

Is weapon prestige in MW4? What the reports say

Activision has not written about weapon prestige for MW4 on any official page yet, and the reports from the preview events point in different directions:

• Detonated (May 28, 2026) reported two prestiges per gun.
• Windows Central (May 28, 2026) reported that Infinity Ward left out Treyarch's weapon prestige system and uses Apex Attachments instead.
• NME (August 23, 2026) reported that the Black Ops 7 weapon prestige camos are gone.

What Activision has said officially is that the Apex Attachment is the final reward for maxing out a weapon. In the beta, max weapon levels ranged from level 30 to level 73, and the beta arsenal was not the full launch lineup, so expect that range to move.

Until launch, treat weapon prestige in MW4 as expected, not confirmed.

Weapon prestige vs player prestige in MW4

Player prestige in MW4 is officially detailed, and there are two ways to do it:

• Classic Prestige starts at level 55. It resets your rank, your unlocks and your Create-a-Class, and in return you earn XP faster and get a prestige token.
• Regular Prestige lets you keep every unlock and gives you a part of the rewards.

If weapon prestige ships, it runs next to that, gun by gun: you could prestige your main AR while the rest of your arsenal still sits at level 1, and your account rank would not change either way.

How weapon prestige worked in Black Ops 7

Black Ops 7 is the best reference for how Call of Duty currently handles it, and Activision laid the system out in full:

1. Prestige 1 and Prestige 2 are started by hand once a gun reaches max level. Each one drops the gun back to level 1 and locks its attachments again, optics excepted.
2. The third time a gun reaches max level, it moves into Prestige Master automatically.
3. Prestige Master runs up to level 250, with master camos at levels 100, 150 and 200.
4. Weapon Prestige Max is reached at level 250.

How weapon prestige worked in Modern Warfare 3

Modern Warfare 3 (2023) did not launch with weapon prestige. It arrived with Season 3 Reloaded on May 1, 2024, and it worked nothing like Black Ops 7: nothing reset. Once a gun was at max level, its weapon XP kept counting toward four prestige camos for that weapon, added over the following seasons.

That adds up to 900,000 weapon XP past max level for the full set on one gun. A few more things worth knowing:

• The reward was the camo. No reset, so the gun kept its level and every attachment.
• Warzone counted too, and Double Weapon XP tokens sped it up.
• One Trick was a camo, not a prestige rank. Players often mix it up with player prestige, which in MW3 was its own separate ladder.

What to expect in Modern Warfare 4

Our expectation is that MW4 leans toward the Modern Warfare 3 model rather than the Black Ops 7 one: once a gun is maxed, weapon XP keeps paying out prestige rewards, instead of resets and a long Master ladder to level 250. That is an expectation based on how the last Modern Warfare game handled it, not an announced system. If the Windows Central report is right, the Apex Attachment at max level could be the end of a gun's progression instead.

What that would mean in practice:

• Your main guns reach prestige first. The weapons you actually play get there naturally, the rest of the arsenal stays at max level until you commit to them.
• Double XP matters more than usual. In MW3 the full camo set took 900,000 weapon XP past max level on a single gun, so bank your 2XP time for the guns you plan to prestige.
• The exact XP per prestige is unknown until launch. Anyone quoting a number for MW4 today is guessing.

The four MW4 prestige camos

Activision showed the prestige camo set in its Prestige Mastery Camo Showcase. There are four, all built on the same volcanic Pyroclast theme and each one louder than the last. The exact milestones for each camo are not published yet, so the order below is the order they were shown in and the one we expect them to unlock in. How they tie into prestige, weapon or player, is part of the launch details too.

1. Pyroclast

The quiet one. Mostly grey and black, with thin green cracks running through the metal like cooled lava. It looks best on a rifle you run every day. Want it without the grind? See our Pyroclast camo boost.

4. Pyroclast Cascade

Prestige camos vs mastery camos

The Pyroclast set is its own track. MW4 also has nine mastery camos, three each for Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ, and those come from the camo challenges, not from prestige. The full list is in our guide to all MW4 mastery camos.
