MW4 Weapon Prestige Explained: The Reset, the Master Ladder and the 4 Pyroclast Camos

Modern Warfare 4 has weapon prestige, and Activision published the whole system for launch. Every weapon gets an optional prestige journey once it reaches max level: one manual prestige that resets the gun, then a Master ladder that never does. Four Pyroclast camos hang off it.

What weapon prestige is

Weapon prestige is progression for a single gun after it reaches max level. It sits next to player prestige and never touches it: prestiging a weapon leaves your account rank alone, and prestiging your account leaves your guns alone.

Max level is not the same number on every gun. In MW4 the caps run from 30 on the melee weapon to 75 on the KG-7 Vulcan, and the level each Military camo needs is scaled to that cap.

First you max the gun

Nothing starts until the weapon is finished:

• Use it in Multiplayer and DMZ to earn weapon XP. Warzone joins that track with Season 1.
• Every level unlocks another attachment in Gunsmith.
• At max level the game offers you Weapon Prestige. It is an offer, not something that happens to you.

Weapon Prestige 1: the only reset

This is the part people want to know about before they commit a gun to it.

• The weapon drops back to level 1 and its attachments relock, with two exceptions: the Apex Attachment stays unlocked, and so does anything that came with a Weapon Blueprint.
• Your other guns are not touched. Shared attachments stay unlocked everywhere else, so prestiging your M4 costs the Han 86 nothing.
• Cosmetics survive. Blueprints, camos, reticles, accessories, decals and stickers are all kept.
• A Weapon Prestige icon appears in Gunsmith and on the killcam.

Two camos come out of this stage:

Pyroclast lands the second you prestige, so the first camo of the set is effectively free once you commit. Terminus is the one that costs a second full run through the gun's levels.

Weapon Prestige Master: no second reset

Hit max level again inside Prestige 1 and the weapon moves into Prestige Master automatically. You do not choose it, and this time nothing resets: the level keeps counting from where it is and every attachment you earned stays. A Prestige Master icon replaces the Prestige 1 one.

Double Weapon XP tokens work the whole way through. The Master stretch is by far the longest part, so that is where they pay off most.

How that compares to Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare 3

If you prestiged guns in either of those, MW4 will not behave the way you expect.

Black Ops 7 asked for two manual prestiges, each one resetting the gun to level 1 and relocking attachments, optics excepted. The third max level moved the gun into Prestige Master, which ran to level 250 with master camos at 100, 150 and 200. MW4 keeps that shape but asks for the reset only once, and puts its two Master camos at 150 and 250.

Modern Warfare 3 (2023) did the opposite. Weapon prestige was not in it at launch, it arrived with Season 3 Reloaded on May 1, 2024, and nothing reset at all. A maxed gun simply kept earning weapon XP toward four camos:

That was 900,000 weapon XP past max level for the full set on one gun, with no reset and no attachments taken away. MW4 is the stricter system of the two: you give the gun up for a while to get the first two camos.

The four MW4 prestige camos

All four are built on the same volcanic Pyroclast theme, and each one is louder than the last.

1. Pyroclast

The quiet one. Mostly grey and black, with thin green cracks running through the metal like cooled lava. It looks best on a rifle you run every day, and you get it the moment you prestige.

2. Pyroclast Terminus

This is where the set starts to glow. Darker olive plates, and the green cracks turn into thick, bright veins that stand out even in a dark corner of the map. It is also the first one that really costs you something: a full set of levels on a gun you just reset.

3. Pyroclast Scatter

Scatter swaps the cracked look for a faceted black surface that catches the light, dusted with small green sparks across the whole gun. It sits at Prestige Master level 150, so by then the resets are behind you.

4. Pyroclast Cascade

The top of the set, at Prestige Master level 250. Almost the entire gun is covered in glossy green, like molten rock poured over the metal. This is the one people will notice in the killcam.
